@Jammer Pipe you're absolutely right! Dynamism is something I struggle with (one of many things) and Peter Chung is a god of movement hey. All I can do is keep sketching and practicing I guess. Thanks for the comment!

@damien, I like the idea of watching the video but I know that if I do then I will definitely no longer be able to lie to myself that eating sugar is ok-ish. Does that sentence make any sense at all? ;)

The running is going ok but am finding it harder and harder to motivate myself out of my warm, cosy bed on these freezing cold, dark mornings.

@damien, Mmmm. Vegetarians. If you do look at the CSIRO you'll probably wonder how I managed to stick to it, because it is very meat focused (something it's been criticised for). The best thing I found about it is how it spells out how to get the right amounts of all the different food groups each day, so ultimately, it's easy to maintain a balanced diet. In fact I probably eat more if I follow it strictly (like more fruit, more dairy, more veg). After a while it also gets pretty easy to substitute alternatives - like eggs or legumes or tofu (if you like that kind of thing!) as a protein instead of meat, or to switch around a bit of bread for a bit of rice or pasta. I haven't noticed any drop in energy levels, and I've just started running again. I generally put down any reluctance I have to keep moving to my overall disinterest in physical activity, and getting out of bed!

@Karene
Heh, Joel's not helping with all his delicious carbs? I do find it damned hard to "fill up" on protein and vegetables.. even when I eat a big serve I still feel generally hungry. But I can handle a bit of hunger, it doesn't get too bad. I'll have to check out the CSIRO book and see what they recommend.. it seems like a good general plan as an ongoing thing once I finish this.
I agree about the craving too.. originally I was thinking my cheat day would be all about lollies and cake, but by Saturday all I want is a nice big bowl of rice.. and maybe a muffin :)
Do you do much exercise with the CSIRO one? I find without easily accessible carbs/sugar energy, I'm not lifting as much weight or as many reps as I was beforehand. I'm generally more tired by the end of the day too.

Great post. I've had good results with the low/no carb approach, specifically on the CSIRO diet, which has a focus on filling up on protein and veg with a limited amount of carbs. It also has some really good family friendly recipes and is easy to maintain (I just have a serve of carb, once a day, either lunch or dinner and that's it). Have to admit though, my body always gets to a point where it just CRAVES some white rice or a massive bowl of pasta - especially living with a potato/rice/pasta powered vegetarian!

@Timothy thanks for the kind words :) I reckon if you want to stop eating sugars you just need to watch that Sugar video I posted.. it's pretty damned disturbing. That being said, you are in good shape so I'm sure you're fine. How is your running going?

Hey Damien - what a fantastic post! Very honest and inspiring.
I'm lucky enough that I don't really have to watch my weight (I'm a skinny bastard like your boss) but I do still struggle to eat well and avoid the foods that I know aren't doing my body good, due to my carb and sugar addictions. I really don't know if I have the discipline to do what you have done/are doing so to hear that you have a plan, are sticking to it and are seeing good results is awesome.
Keep it up mate! :)

Heya bro.. I'm glad you liked it. I've been meaning to write this for a while, and get all the experiences in there. Whether it helps keep me motivated too remains to be seen :)

This was exactly what I needed to hear (read) to refocus. I was doing the Tim Ferriss low-carb, high protein thing ("Four Hour Body") and my weight wasn't shifting (although I had more energy and it fixed up any indigestion that I was getting). I suspect that I was building muscle, but we didn't have the bioresistance scales to check.

More recently I've been counting calories, trying to limit (but not exclude) carbs, and I've seen my weight AND body-fat go down: from 96kg to hovering just below 91kg, and 29.5% body-fat (which is a lot, but I've been > 30% for such a long time!). I've had SOME bread (although it can make me feel sick), not much in the way of potatoes, pasta or rice, but cereal for breakfast.

Last week I took a few days off (we had to move out of our house for renovation), and with baby due any day now I'm not likely to get back to "dedicated" for a little while yet, but this post was inspiring! Thanks!
